This weekends message is a real important one when it comes to your life. Not only do I pray that you understand what I’m talking about today, but that you take a little time to answer some of the following questions. Your answers, combined with God’s Spirit working in your life, could change your life forever.

How do you determine what’s really important to you? Think through a few of these questions:
• What do I value the most?

• What are the things that matter the most in my life?

• What type of person do I want to be?

• What words best describe me?

• Am I living a life that reflects what I really value?

• What do I want written on my tombstone?

• What values do I want to be remembered by after my life is over?

• How does God fit into my values?

• Are my values consistent with God’s values?

• Can people see my real values in how I live my life?

Wow! These are tough questions. I encourage you not to let this week slide past you without taking some time to evaluate your life and what you value. Growth and change is tough. Don’t give up on this!

Sermon Title: Week 1

Sermon in a Sentence: God created you for a purpose, in order to know what that is, we need to have Him at the center of our lives.

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 6 out of 10

Attendance: 71

Service Length: 60min

Understandable Message: 7 out of 10 (most difficult) Some students really don't look much past next week, or even later on in the day. We were speaking about looking to your future, career, life, and eternity. So it was a difficult idea for some of them to grasp. We tried to bring it home with what they love to do, their hopes and aspirations. That even with their idea of a perfect life; that God has a better plan, filled with more than they can imagine.

Grade: B-

Volunteer/Student Involvement: N/A missed the boat this time!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Used darts, and Nerf guns to illustrate how hard it can be to hit a bulls eye. We also used a pitcher full of water, filling a glass half full. The students were told this is their life, seen as half full or half empty. That God wants to give abundantly(over flowed the cup on to the table)

Favorite Moment: Baptisms! 9 of them this weekend. One new believer in Christ, and a student with lots of questions!!! I love that!

Wednesday Teaching Series: Gospel Journey

Sermon Title: Session 1

Sermon in a Sentence: Intro to the students on the journey.

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 7 out of 10 Last minute skit and game, so worth it though! I love working with a creative team! The night seamed a little rushed, not as much discussion time as I would have liked.

Attendance: 58

Service Length: 90min

Understandable Message: Tonight Greg Stier talked about the difference between a religion(Bad News) and the Gospel(Good News).

Grade: Solid B

Volunteer/Student Involvement: Roni came up with a skit and game and they were awesome! Jeremy on the sound board. Jayne, Tina, Jon, Rees, Roni, and Laurie lead small group discussions. LOVE this team!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Since we are on a journey we had a tent setup with fishing poles, sleeping bags, coolers etc. setup in the room. Rees, Roni and myself dressed up in our hiking best! Backpacks, boots, hats etc.

Music Playlist: Tell the world, Hosanna, From the Inside Out

Favorite Moment: Listening to some of the thoughts about religion versus relationship(gospel) and how we as individuals and as the church can show our friends and communities the difference. Had some great conversations with a student who feels called to missionary work, and wants to be a student leader. A couple other are getting baptized this weekend. So many cool things happening in our youth ministry, I feel so blessed to be a part of it!!

Overnighter Rewind

Friday August 7th-8th Alive Student Ministries hosted its first Overnighter. This event saw a total of 84 students 15 of which had never been to our church before! The night was filled with fun, food, games, prizes, movies, and best of all no sleep!

Rockband on the Wii was played on the main sanctuary's 3 big screens over an awesome sound system, and was a huge hit. Students formed 4 person bands complete with band name and rockstar apparel. The students were judged on their score, crowd involvement, and their ability to rock! After the 11 bands were through three were chosen to continue on to the finals. The runners up won In n Out gift cards, while the winners received movie theater cards!

Another big hit was Kajabi Can Can. No students or adults were hurt, although the trash can was decimated!

Many other games were played pitting the different grades against each other. With candy and prizes being thrown into the crowd all night, the students were wired!

There was down time where students got the chance to play video and board games, and just hang out. This was an awesome time for the leaders to hanging out and getting to know the students.

The event was a success due in large part to an awesome group of volunteers:
Rees Hinton, Jon Scalise, Roni Bourgios, Michelle Petz, and Sherry Jordan. Thank you all so much for loving students, and being just crazy enough to stay up all night!!

Bulls Eye Living Intro

Greetings, friends,

I recently attended a Summer League Basketball game. It got me thinking about the time, energy, discipline, and dedication that got me into playing a sports. Playing any sport at any level in high school or Junior High is tough. But even in the midst of all that is required, people continue to play.

Students play sports for a variety of reasons. They value the reward of participation. They enjoy the benefits of competition. They like the company of their teammates. And the thrill of winning is a “rush” that’s difficult to explain.

When I watch students participate in athletics, I wonder about the amount of time they give to their sport. Then I wonder about the amount of time they give to God. Coaches require and demand their athletes to give a lot of time and energy to their sports program, and this is rarely questioned.

I encourage you to think about the time you give to God this week. Are there areas of your life that you are spending huge amounts of time in (school, sports, TV, friends, hanging out, etc.)?

While all these may be important, here are my questions:

· How about your time with God?

· Are you spending time with Him on a continual basis?

· Is He getting any of your time? Prayer? Bible reading? Studying?

These questions aren’t intended to create a “guilt trip” but to encourage you to think about and rethink your priorities. But just as sports is important and worthy of your time, so is God. Not only is God important, He’s more worthy of your time than anything else you could invest in. If you’re going to grow, you need to spend time with Him.

Camp Reunion

Tonight's Camp Reunion had a great turn out. It was so much fun watching the students see themselves on screen, and cheering on their friends. The video was a little too long, but there was just so much good footage, and I wanted to get every student some air time.

We played a couple of camp games: Mystery Canned Food, and Snooter Shooter(Skittles shot from the nostril for distance.) The games were a hit, what made them fun was some of the parents were contestants. We gave away the One Minute Bible to the students who played the games.

Being sick is no fun; being sick and trying to speak is the worst! I am not even sure I made sense tonight lol So glad I have some awesome people to do ministry with.

My friends testimony

This is my friend, and fellow youth worker Laurie. I had the opportunity to hang out with Laurie at the HSM Summer Camp this year. She was one of the awesome volunteers that gave up a week of her time to go to camp and minister to our youth. When God has done a work in someones life, like He has in hers, people see the real deal. Laurie is the real deal! I am so grateful to have her on our team. My prayer is that her testimony will show God's power, grace, and love, to those who don't know Him. That her story might help others struggling with their own identity, especially our teens.

It so exciting to work with volunteers who love God and enjoy working with students! One of our volunteers has such a heart to see students study God's word, she donated money to purchase 70 One Minute Bibles by Doug Fields. I spent a large portion of today brain storming for our Overnighter out reach event, scheduled for this Friday, with another incredible volunteer! Going to be such a fun event, what a way to kick off the new school year. I feel so blessed that God has allowed me to do what I love, and that He has surrounded me with an awesome team! I could not do it without them.

HSM Summer Camp Prescott Pines '09

HSM Summer Camp Prescott Pines '09

We made it back, tired, bruised, but triumphant! The week was won by the orange team, Alive HSM! It was so incredible to see God moving among the students and leaders at camp. Sharing hopes, dreams, and fears. One student came to Christ, and 8 others rededicated themselves to living for Him!!! I got to pray and cry with some students, and hear how God was speaking to them.
Our speaker was awesome check him out on his Facebook John Heston He really spoke to the students with stories, and some interactive lessons. One of the best nights was the worship night. Students were not to talk, but were offered many different ways to connect with God. Writing their sins in the sand, and whipping them away, writing a letter to God. Through art, reading about the death and resurrection of Jesus, and praying with their leaders. Such an incredible time.
Thank you to all the leaders who gave their time to come and show the love of Christ to these students. You made a difference, and I could not do this thing called youth ministry without you!

Sermon Title: Living Out God's Way

Sermon in a Sentence: We need to train spiritually as believers

Versus Used: Mark 14:38-39, Romans 8:15, 1 John 1:7, Matt 7:13-14, Philippians 3:14, Colossians 2:19, Ephesians 6:17, Psalm 100:4, 2 Corinthians 9:12-13

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 6 out of 10. First time we did not break into small groups, so it was a change for many of the students. We are moving away from the small group time, to make guests and seekers feel more comfortable.

Attendance: 55 students

Service Length: 85 min

Understandable Message: 4 out of 10. Pretty easy, we used videos to show how we can put Jesus in the trunk, while we take the wheel. Sometimes we think we know best, and we can be in control of our lives. When really we should give Jesus the keys and ride shotgun.

Grade: B

Volunteer/Student Involvement: Students- Jeremy ran the sound and video, Andrew on the lights. Adult Leaders- Jayne helped with the power point game.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: The game ended in an 8 way tie! So we used sleeping bags over the students as a tie breaker. The winning teams sent one representative to the front, they were matched up one on one, and on their knees had to pin the opponent. Winners moved on until the finals. Great time! We also had the use of a fog machine tonight with new laser lights! So cool. BEST OF ALL we had 5 students accept Christ for the first time!

Favorite Moment: Seeing 5 students move from creations of God, to children of God!

Personal: Still struggling with students not paying attention. I know that some of it is just students being students, and some of it is that I am the new guy in town. I am prayerful that as I build relationships with the students, and they see I am doing ministry because I truly care. That they will be more attentive, and more engaging. I feel so blessed that I can do what I love and support my family, thank you Jesus!

Minefields

We’re talking about temptation in our series “Making it Through Minefields.” I don’t care whether you are the most spiritual person in here or the most unspiritual person in here; your life is a walk through a minefield. What do I mean by a minefield? Well, I kind of enjoy August when it comes around, and we get the incoming freshmen and sixth graders in, and they have a lot of this enthusiasm and spirit. They’re all excited about their faith. They’ve got their notebooks filled out, their Christian t-shirts; they are ready to go. Then they step on the high-school or junior high campus, and all of a sudden, these little minefields start popping up, these things that, even though their heart and their mind is set on “Yeah, I want to be a totally committed Christian,” these minefields start blowing up on them. When I’m talking about minefields, I’m talking about temptations. I’m talking about things like drinking; I’m talking about things like sex; I’m talking about stealing; I’m talking about cheating; I’m talking about lying so you look good; I’m talking about smoking; I’m talking about bad habits; I’m talking about addiction to food. Whatever it is, when you hear the word “temptation,” what flashes in your mind? Whatever that is, those are the minefields that really draw us away from our pursuit from knowing the truth and our pursuit of knowing God and being committed and walking the way the Lord wants us to walk. I hope you will join us this weekend for the first in our three week series “Making it Through Minefields.”

Things I Should Have Brought To Camp!!

After heading out to my first summer camp since I was in junior high, I realized that there were a few thing that I should have brought! I hope this helps leaders and students to have a better experience at camp.

* Flat Sheet- It was way too hot to sleep in a sleeping bag, and the plastic mattress stuck to my skin, and felt like it was ripping it off every time I rolled over. It also made a horrible noise!

* Fan- No AC, and no air circulation! Ugh....enough said.

* Camelback Water System- This frees up your hands, and allows for some storage. Much better than a water bottle.

* Several Pens- I lost mine on the first day!

* Medical Kit- We had a student get something in his eye, when the camp councilor opened the medical kit, his words were,"Well this is useless!" Camp games seem to be of a "rough" nature, we had many cuts and scrapes. Band-aids, Band-aids, Band-aids!

* Backpack- For off-site adventures.

* Spray Sunscreen- Much easier than lotion, or getting burned.

* Air freshener- Teenage boys....enough said!

* Sun Glasses Keeper- (not sure what they are called) That way you don't lose them!

* More- Socks, Underwear, Bandannas, cash.

JHM Camp Rewind

We made it back, everyone accounted for, and very few injuries. 6 days in Prescott at UCYC. What a great experience! Rock climbing, paint balling, zip-lines, games, music by DSM, and of course some incredible messages. Josh Finklea had some incredible stories, and really connected to the students where they were at. One of the messages that really seamed to touch students hearts was,"You are Beautiful, you are Dirty, and you are Loved."

You are Beautiful- In today's society, it is hard for young women, and men to accept that they are beautiful. It's not something that they hear everyday, for some it may be something they have never heard before. God created us, as beautiful creations. Matt. 10:29-31

You are Dirty- We are all dirty, covered in sin. We get ourselves into messes, and then try to cover them up. Josh told a story about taking his dad's Bronco when he was 14 years old. He ended up trashing it, not wanting to face the music, he stayed out until it got dark. When he decided to go home, he saw his mom and dad sitting on the couch, angry. When he walked in the door, he saw his 16 year old brother getting read the riot act! Josh walked right by and went to bed! 20 plus years later Josh confessed to everyone at Thanksgiving that he was the driver! The point being, we can make huge messes of our lives.

You are Loved- God created us to be with Him. He created us because He loved us, when we sinned, and broke the rules, He sent His only son to pay the price for our sin. No matter where we have been, or what we have done, God still loves us. He still wants us to come home, He wants to forgive us just as in the story of the Prodigal Son. Luke 15:11-32

During our quite times, and group times we took a look at the life of David. Students identified with David's story. Some really great conversations happened in our group times.

The one question that hit home with all of the students was,"Are you a Fan or Follower of Jesus?" You can be a fan of a sports team. Know their stats, watch the games, buy the clothing. But when they disappoint you, you stop being a fan. Your support of the team is dependant on how they are performing, or how they make you feel. Many of us do that with Jesus. We believe in Him, we praise Him in the good times, but when He fails to meet our expectations, we push Him away. A follower is one that says, I will praise you no matter what. I will follow you even if you don't meet my expectations.

When asked, 4 students said they were just checking out the whole God thing. They were on the outside looking in. 8 of them admitted to being more of a fan than a follower. All of them wanted to take steps to move to the next level. Although no decisions for Christ were made, the 4 students are going to continue to investigate Jesus! The 8 students are going to take steps to become followers and not fans.

In all it was a great camp experience. Hanging out and getting to know that students was an awesome way to integrate into a new church. I am loving my Alive family, and look forward to the HSM Summer Camp in one week.

JHM Camp Log- Day 0

Today we leave for camp with the JHM! I am so excited, that I barely slept last night. Remember the feeling you had as a child the night before Christmas? Yeah that's the kind of night I had! I am really hoping that they have Internet for the leaders; yes I am addicted. No, the reason is I would love to be able to do daily updates for the parents! I have come up with a back up plan just in case, I will keep a daily log, and when we return I will update the blog. Please be praying for lives to be changed, memories to be made, and relationships to be strengthened. Also pray for Rees, Jayne and myself that we can salvage whatever sanity we have left!

Christianity 101

I love the way Francis explains Christianity. So many people get hung up on the fact that they are "good" people, and by the worlds standards they probably are. But if God did create everything, then He has the right to judge us based on His standards not ours. See God is a loving God, but He is also a just God. Having broken His laws, there is a penalty to be paid, and that penalty is death. It would be like if someone murdered one of your family members, and at the trial, the judge let him off because he had pity on him. That would not be justice right? We would say that judge was not a good and moral judge. I mean you would want the punishment to fit the crime. See because God is just, the crimes can not go unpunished. There must be justice. The Bible says we have all sinned and fall short of the mark. Rom 3:22-24 However, here is the best part, because God is also a loving God He gives us a get out of hell free card if you will. He sent His son Jesus Christ to take our punishment on himself. To pay the price so that we can live forever with Him. You don't have to know everything about Him. You don't have to get yourself all cleaned up before you come to Him. Come as you are. He died for us while we were still sinners. Rom 5:6-8 Accept the free gift He has given you. Put your trust in Him, and make Him the leader of your life. Check out this video Francis did.

Youth Group

Great night last night. I got to meet the JHM and HSM campus youth pastors for Continental Ranch, Steve and Heather
Very cool people, I am so excited to have them on the team! Had a great conversation with a guy who is really struggling with the whole idea of God, judgment, and eternity. It was his first night at Alive, and there was not near enough time to really wrestle through all of his questions. It's so cool to see people really seeking God, to find out if He is real. I am praying that he comes back over the next few weeks, and joins us for the Gospel Journey
No youth next Wednesday night! We will be at camp with our awesome JHM group! What an awesome time it will be. Be praying for lives to be changed, and for all of us to leave there closer to God.

Overnighter in August

Planning for a 12 hour overnighter, or if you are old school, a lock in. I never liked that term, it sounds like we are holding them captive under lock and key! The overnighter is to help kick off the new school year right! We use this as an out reach tool for students to invite their friends, this can be a powerful thing. 12 hours filled with games(foosball, air hockey, ping pong), food, fun, movies, prizes, and Rock Band on the big screens. Students will form their bands and battle it out to see who is the best! I am so looking forward to this great outreach event! August 7-8th from 7pm-7am stay tuned for more information!

Friend First, Teacher Second?

Unfortunately I think there are too many youth leaders like this today. Leaders who want to be friends first, and a role model second.... if at all! Leaders who strive so hard to be accepted by students, and get into their world, who forget that it is their calling to teach these young people. Don't get me wrong, relationships are so important in student ministry...but we have to remember that we are there to teach, to model Jesus for young people. Teens do not need another friend, they do not need another activity. What they need is Godly men and women, who will model Christ's love and His word.
So have some fun, build those relationships, but always remember to put Christ at the center of everything. Look for, and don't shy away from those teachable moments. I have heard it said that we may be the only Jesus someone ever meets.

On Saturday July 11th, Rock N'Java is privileged to welcome Allen Frizzell from Nashville!!!

Allen comes from a family rich in country music tradition. He is the youngest brother of the Legendary Lefty Frizzell, Artist & Songwriter Hall of Famer and also David Frizzell, a Grammy Nominated, ACM & CMA award-winner.

Like his brothers, Allen delivers rich, country gospel in that world-famous Frizzell way - he's a crooner with a great heart for God.

It's going to be a great show and also kind of a family reunion all rolled into one. Allen also just happens to be the father of one of Alive Church's music leaders, Jeff Frizzell and the two of them will surely do a little music together.

You won't want to miss this very special night. Experience some great country music heritage, meet the Frizzell's and get a CD signed and of course, we'll have some great food and all of your favorite Rock n' Java beverages.

The concert is free, but we will be receiving donations to support the Frizzell's music ministry.

I am so excited about working with everyone at Alive Church! I have not "officially" started, and already I feel like part of the family. Last night I met with Rees, an awesome youth leader with a heart for discipleship. We have already started planning for August, including and overnighter, and then The Gospel Journey. This guy is legit, I can't wait to meet everyone else as the next few days and weeks go by. Tomorrow night will be my first night with the youth group. I have to admit, I am a little nervous... but more than that I am excited! July is going to be a busy month one week of JH camp followed by one week of HS camp. I can not think of a better way to really get to know the students, and for them to get to know me, than going to camp. Thank you God for this opportunity, use me to reach students, to grow them, and to further Your kingdom!

Farewell and Hello

Today was my last day at The Rock. Thank you for sending me off with love, kind words, and prayer. After the congregation prayed over my family and I the students had a surprise for me in the student ministry room. They put together this video/slide show. It was such a touching reminder of why I do ministry. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.

Although I am sad to leave, I know that Alive Church is where God wants me to be. I am excited about joining this new church family! I look forward to building memories and relationships with the people at Alive.

Tonight was my last night of Fuel at The Rock. So cool to hang out with all the students, even some faces we have not seen in a while. Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 10 out of 10 Missing two leaders, both who run the tech/sound board. The 10 really comes from telling the students I was hired full time at Alive Church. I am super psyched about the new position, but it's still hard to leave the students I have grown so close to.

Understandable Message: Super easy to understand how Fathers both earthly and Heavenly want the best for us. Father's Day may not be a happy occasion for all people. Some have uninvolved, absent, or deceased fathers. However their is a Father that loves us far more than any earthly father ever could.

When churches focus and worry so much about money are they putting their faith in people instead of God?

Is it Biblical to stand before the congregation and guilt people into tithing?

2 Corinthians 9:7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

To rattle of statistics of how many tithe and how many don't. To put the blame on the congregation for not being able to support ministry staff?

Too often when you ask un-churched people or non-believers what the church is all about, they say,"The church just wants your money." Unfortunately a message I heard today may have just confirmed that in some peoples minds.

I believing in tithing. How we teach it can either educate people, or turn them off. However, I do not believe that tithing should be something that people are guilted into.

When is it right to leave a church?

I think many people leave churches for the wrong reason. Found this article very informative, and I thought I would share it.

The main points I see are:
-If the word is not being taught
-If doctrinally is does not lineup with the Bible

See I think that too many people are challenged by what they hear or what they see, and they take the easy way out. Here is what I mean.

- I know some people who have been challenged by what the Bible says about their life style, or the choices they make.

Some people are trying to find a Jesus that fits their lives rather than them fitting His. Topics such as tithing, sex, forgiveness, serving do not fit into our view of life. So they leave to find another church that will except their personal views.

Here is the problem, it is not about us. We do not make the rules, it is not our universe.

Romans 12:2

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.

-Challenged by what they see

There are no perfect churches. If you find a perfect church it is no longer perfect because you are there! Every church has problems, every family has problems. You would not run away from your family because of an argument or disagreement. You would try to work things out, to make changes, to strengthen the family. Too many times people run when they see a problem rather than trying to do something about it.
Here is my question. Are you a part of the problem or part of the solution? See if you sit by and don't get involved in ministry, how can you pass judgment? Dive in, be a part of the solution, because if you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem!

Last weekend my wife and I attended a marriage conference. During one of the sessions a couple behind us, would give an audible, "Mmmm Hmmm" to everything they agreed with. After about the twentieth time it got VERY annoying. So we made sure, in the next session, we did not sit in front of them. About 5 minutes into the lesson...."Mmmm Hmmm" I could hear them across the isle and four rows back!!! It made it so hard to concentrate.

To me when someone does this they are saying,"Look at me, I agree with that statement." Personally I don't care if you agree with anything the speaker is saying. I am there to learn, and you are being very distracting. Please, be quite and have respect for those around you. If you want a podium, please host your own conference.

Crazy thing is, when we were walking out, the couple was at a booth....they work with Family Life!!!!

What do we say when the youth pastor leaves?

It’s June. Professional youth ministries most dangerous month. I’ve served in three churches and all the hiring, firing, quitting, and retiring with the youth ministry seems to happen in June. It’s a wicked combination of the end of the school year and for a lot of churches, the end of the budget year. I could offer some theories as to why so many churches hire and fire in June… but that’s not the point of this post.

“What do we say when the youth pastor leaves?”

Church leaders: Tell the truth. If the person quit, just say they quit. You don’t have to spin it. Just tell it like it is.

But if you are firing them, I can’t tell you how many people I have talked to who were fired and then asked to enter into an agreement (never in writing) that for a sum of money they will say that they have decided to quit. Hundreds. If you are man or woman enough to fire a person than be man or woman enough to tell the congregation. You don’t pay severence to someone you are firing to cover up the fact that you are firing them. You pay them severance because they are self-employed and ineligible to claim unemployment benefits. It only makes matters worse when you fire a person and then put on a charade that you are sad to see them go. You throw a party, you say all sorts of glowing things in public when you know full well that you sat in a board room and decided this person needed to be fired. If you lie, your lie will be found out. Your sin will be exposed and the embarrassment you were trying to avoid will come back to haunt you for years. If you made a brave decision as the leadership of the church then it is a sign of your strength as leaders. When you try to wuss out, it shows what kind of leaders you are.

The truth always wins.

Church staff: Tell the truth. If the leaders of your church dismissed a person don’t ever lie about it. It’s perfectly acceptable to say, “The leaders decided to go another direction.” You don’t have to go into the specifics of why the person was fired. But don’t participate in the leaders lie if they are trying to spin the truth. That makes you party to the lie! Your corroborating the leaders story and remember, the truth will come out eventually. And remember, this is exactly how you will be treated if they let you go later.

The truth always wins.

Youth Pastor: Tell the truth. I have been in your shoes. I know what it’s like to have that meeting where the leaders tell you that you aren’t the person they want pastoring their kids anymore. I have felt my world crash around me in that moment. I’ve looked across that table when they told me what to say. They are going to wave a big check in front of your eyes and you are going to think, “How else can I feed my family? How will I pay my rent? How will I have enough money to get the heck out of here?” Just don’t get bought by Satan. Think about it… would Jesus ask you to lie in His name? Not telling the truth is telling a lie! Church leaders who ask you to lie for a little bit of money are doing the work of your sworn enemy. Walk out of that meeting with integrity. Do not cave to their pressure and promise of financial security to further their lie. They will end up offering you the same severance check anyway… because it is the right thing to do and the congregation will demand it. Moreover, your telling a lie to the congregation will only make matters worse. They are trying to get you to take the fall because they know you are leaving the church.

Candidates for youth ministry positions: Find the truth. Your well-being and the well-being of your family and future ministry depend on you discovering the truth! If you are interviewing at a church you need to talk to the former youth worker. During the interview process ask the search committee about the previous person. Then ask for their email address or phone number so you may contact them. This is 2009, you can find them in 10 minutes on the internet. Be a detective and get to the truth as to why that person left. If there is a lie… don’t take the job. This is precisely how you will be treated. If the previous youth worker was fired and the pastor and the elders participated in that lie, confront them! No matter how good they make that job sound, that entire relationship will be based on lies unless they come clean. Confront their sin and then don’t take the job. Show them what a leader looks like.

Some may read this and think, “Boy, Adam McLane has a chip on his shoulder about this.“ You would be correct. I am sick of seeing my friends in ministry asked to lie for a few thousand bucks. I am sick of churches hiding the fact that have fired a person. I am tired of the Bride of Christ doing things that are worse or even illegal than happens in the business world. I know that a healthy ministry can only be built on the truth. And it is time to speak up and get some truth out there.

This conference was awesome! If you did not make it this year, look for it next year.

Every year that I have attended the Weekend to Remember, I leave with valuable tools that make me a better husband, father, and most of all more obedient to God.

Key Verses: Eph. 5:25, 28, 29 - 1 Peter 3:7 - 1 Cor. 11:3 - 1 Tim. 5:8

Some of my favorite times: I loved the breakout sessions with my wife. i.e. homework, both on and off campus. Writing love letters, sharing strengths, and weaknesses. Admitting that I have not been the kind of husband that God wants me to be or that she deserves. One thing that stuck with me is that as a man, I will have to give an account to God on how I treated my wife. God wants me to give back to Him, a woman that was better than when He gave her to me. WOW! The last day the men and women were separated and had gender specific discussions. All I can say is, I AM half the man/husband/father that I should be. We all fall short, but I want to leave the best legacy that I can as a husband and as a father. During the last session we stood and renewed our wedding vows to one another....made me cry looking into the eyes of my wife and holding her hands.

God HELP! Help me be a better man, a better husband, and a better father. Thank you for this conference, and the people who make it possible. I want to return to You a better woman than you gave me. I want to leave a positive legacy for my children. I want to love You more, and to hear you say,"Well done my good and faithful child."

Weekend to Remember- Day 2 Session 6

Main Theme: How couples resolve conflict reflects the state of their oneness.

Overview: What causes conflict, and how can you deal with it in a way that honors God, and honors your marriage.

Food for Thought:
1. Conflict happens in ALL marriages
2. The goal of marriage is not to be conflict free, but to handle correctly WHEN it happens
3. Healthy conflict resolution occurs when couples are willing to seek and grant forgiveness

Where does conflict come from?

Conflict occurs when our desires are not fulfilled, or when we don't get what we want.

1. Our "rights" have been violated
2. Our expectations are not met
3. When we get hurt

Loving Confrontation

Before you confront the offender, examine the offense

1. Does the offense require confrontation? Proverbs 19:11

2. What part did you contribute to the conflict?

3. Examine your heart- Are you trying to: Retaliate, Restore, Punish, or Pursue Peace?

Your mate is NOT your enemy!!

Lovingly Confront: Eph. 4:15

1. Speak the truth in LOVE Eph. 4:29

2. Approach with care- Is the timing right? Is the focus right?

3. Choose your words carefully- Confront with humility, Speak the Truth in LOVE

4. Your goal should be to restore oneness. Gal. 6:1

Resolving Conflict Requires Forgiveness

The Bible says that we are ALL responsible to God to seek and grant forgiveness

The offender needs to seek forgiveness. Eph. 4:32

1. Admit to God and to yourself that you were wrong- Be specific, accept responsibility for the consequences, and consider and be willing to address the desires and attitudes that may have led to the offense.

2. Humbly seek forgiveness

I was wrong for saying ________, I am sorry that I ______ etc. Be specific in your asking of forgiveness!

3. The offended spouse NEEDS to grant forgiveness.

True Forgiveness is NOT:

* Pretending something did not happen

* Conditional

* Forgetting

* An automatic cure

Granting Forgiveness IS:

* A choice to set your spouse free from the debt of their offense

* An attitude of letting go of resentment and vengeance

* The first step towards rebuilding trust

* An act of obedience to God

Main Theme: What if marriage was about more than just happiness?

Overview: Marriage was designed by God and is defined by God, and is at the center of God's purpose for mankind

Mirror God's Image

God joined man and woman together to mirror His image. Gen. 1:27 Both men and women have a piece of what God looks like. Together they complete the image. Matt 19:4-6, John 17:22-23

Couples who mirror God's image experience oneness in marriage.

Mutually Complete One Another

God designed Marriage to be a companionship

1. First social institution- Adam and Eve were the first marriage, ordained by God.

2. First system of interdependent relationships- Great quote for all you Rocky I fans. Pauly asks Rocky why he is interested in his sister Adrian. "I got gaps, shes got gaps, together we got no gaps." Great depiction of how couples have different strengths and weaknesses, but together we help each other.

3. It takes priority in the relationship of the family- Your spouse is to take priority over your children. When children see that Mom and Dad are doing well, not perfect, but loving each other and making one another a priority, kids feel secure.

Oneness in marriage is only possible when we consider our spouse before we consider ourselves Phil. 2:3-4

God's purpose for marriage is challenged by an opposing force

Marital companionship is challenged by:

1. Shame- Gen 3:7

2. Guilt- Gen 3:8

3. Fear- Gen 3:9-10

4. Blame Shifting- Gen 3:11-14

5. Battle for Control- Gen 3:7-16

A Godly legacy is being challenged by a Godless legacy. (The Worlds values) Satan is threatened by couples becoming one, so Satan focuses his major attacks on married couples. Eph. 6:12

Session Two

Main Theme: Communication is Essential

Overview: How we communicate, and understanding how our spouse communicates can bring oneness in our marriage

Communication can be Difficult:

1. Land the Plane- These are communicators the want to find the shortest path to reaching a goal in conversation. They want others to get to the point.

VERSES

2. Enjoy the Ride- Communicators that think you might as well relax and enjoy the ride, its about the trip not the destination. These communicators throw in side stories in discussion. Unlike the Land the Planer's who want just the facts, this group loves story telling. They paint a whole picture, including facts and stories that in the Land the Planes eyes are not necessary.

3. Share Your Feelings- Emotions are a part of their thinking. If they are talking about a plane crash, their emotions play a big part into their sharing the story. "I feel so sad for the poor families that lost loved ones in the plane crash. I can't imagine what they are going through, it breaks my heart."

VERSES

4. Just the Facts- This group sets aside feelings for logic, reason and facts. "How many died on the plane, why did it crash etc."

5. Think out LOUD- They ask questions and make comments while others are still trying to explain, or get something across. Conversation is a group activity for them. They tend to interrupt frequently while you are speaking, and even finish thoughts for you.

VERSES

6. Lets Take Turns- Conversations are of a you talk, I listen and then I talk and you listen format.

When we are at opposite ends of these styles, misunderstanding can take place. We can help promote healthy communications by adjusting our style to honor each other.

You may have communication habits that need to be broken.

4 Tips for Listening:

1. Give focused attention
2. Listen with acceptance and understanding
3. Ask clarifying questions,; and make clarifying statements
4. Focus on what is being said, not how its being said.

4 Tips for Expressing Yourself:

1. Think before you speak

3. Ask to make sure you are being understood
4. Speak in a way that encourages

Session One

Main Theme: Move from Isolation to Oneness

Overview: Why Marriages Fail- Understanding what threatens our marriage can help us achieve oneness.

Threats:

1. Difficult Adjustments- Our culture does not encourage couples to make the adjustments necessary to achieve marital oneness. Each person brings different backgrounds into the marriage. Things like values, religion, past relationships, pain, scarres... Our superficial motivations require us to make some adjustments. Sometimes those adjustments can be difficult. Differing expectations about marriage result in unexpected adjustments. Things like roles, how to express love, plans for the future, all change when you move from being single to being married.

2. Culture Patterns- Our culture tells us we need to be 50/50. You do your part and I will do mine. You give, and then I give. This pattern is destine to self destruct.

3. Inevitable Difficulties- It's not if they will come, but how we respond to them when they do. There are two failures in our response to difficulties. One is failing to anticipate that difficulties will come, and two is our failure to respond properly to those difficulties. Difficulties do not mean that something is wrong with your marriage, it means you are human. Our response to difficulties can either drive us apart or bring us together. Sometimes we pretend that there are no problems, that they will just go away on their own. Sometimes we attack or blame others for the problems. We must come up with a plan on how to work through our problems without rejecting or withdrawing from our spouse.

4. Extramarital Affairs- An affair is an escape or search for fulfillment outside of marriage. This does not have to be with another person. There can be hobby affairs, career affairs, even family affairs(putting your kids before your spouse).

5. Selfishness- We are born self centered, and this is destructive in relationships. Our culture encourages us to be selfish, "It's all about YOU" Selfishness robs a relationship of it's romance. We become critical of our spouses weaknesses, or failure to meet our expectations. Our disappointment in them can lead to bitterness, rejection, our discouragement.

This 3 week series will take a look at the wounds or scares that we all have. Some are physical, while others go much deeper. Emotional wounds and scares can impact our life. They can either make us stronger, or if left unchecked, they can continue to hurt us for the rest of our lives. These wounds and scares may be self inflicted, or inflicted by someone. In this 3 week series we will dive in to emotional wounds, and scares. How we get them, what can be done to prevent them, and how we can heal from them. My prayer is that through this series our wounds and scares will begin to heal. That conversations will happen, that we will allow God to heal us.

Yesterday my family spent at the pool. My son who is 3 can not swim yet, and he is totally dependent on Dad while in the water. I got him jumping of the side of the pool into my arms, he was having a great time! Until; he went completely under the water. Although I had caught him, he was in complete panic mode. I calmed him down by saying,"Look at me, look at me, you are all right, I got you." Then locking eyes with me he would calm down, and say,"Let's do it again!" We did this over and over for the remainder of the day. Most of the time his head remain above the water, and he would say, "Again, again" The times that his head would go under, I would have to reassure him, and calm him down again. "Look at me, look at me, you are all right, I got you."

As I thought more about the day in the water with my son, I thought about how we are not much different than this little boy. When our head is above the water we are screaming"Again, again!" But when times get tough, and our head goes under the water, our Father says,"Look at Me, look at Me, you are all right, I got you."

John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.

When your head goes under the water, do you go into panic mode? Or are you jumping in, and trusting that the hands of your Daddy are going to catch you? Knowing that He will say,"It's all right, I got you."

It seams to me that the majority of the people that church shop, never stay at one church for very long. Why do you think people "church shop?"

I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. ¹³I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
When I look at this passage, I am starting to really understand what Paul was talking about. Through this 6 month season of not having a job, and being turned down over and over, God has provided for me and my family the whole time. Realizing that we may loose a house, or have to move, or take a job that will move me from one ministry into another. God has a plan, He is providing, and He will continue to provide. I am content in my situation. Content in the fact that I know He has a plan, that He is in control. He is my God, and through Him all things are possible!

We did a Straight Talk format, in which students were give 3x5 cards to write whatever questions they had regarding the Bible, relationships etc. They then dropped the cards in anonymously into our question box. We then read, discussed, and looked up the answers to the questions. They ranged from "Why are there so many cliques?" to "Why does it hurt so much when you breakup?" to "Why are parents annoying, and why do they try to control everything?" Great discussions.

The last question of the evening proved to be one that would take more than 5 minutes. The question was "Why is it wrong to be gay?" I told the students I would blog on this one.

What bothers me is that we forget that we are all sinners. God hates the sin, but loves the sinner. If we are followers of Jesus, it does not mean that we are not tempted. It means that we choose to not partake in the sin. It's not the feeling, it's the action. That's what repenting means, not just saying in prayer that you have sinned and you are sorry. But actually turning away from the sin.

Many Christians forget that Jesus hung out with the sinners, and although He did not agree with what they were doing, He loved on the person.

I would encourage you, as a follower of Jesus, to truly follow HIM. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Remember YOU are a sinner too, and that Jesus loves you, forgives you, and wants your relationship with Him to be a strong one.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Sent three student leaders into Kids Rock, they blindfolded the newly promoted 6th graders, and lead them into our class. They were brought up front, and were welcomed with cheers as they removed their blindfolds. Powerpoint game and lots of candy were a hit.

This movie has something for the whole family. What I loved most about it was the love that Carl had for Ellie. In the end, Carl discovers that he did fulfill his childhood promise of taking Ellie on the adventure of a lifetime.....the adventure was their marriage.

This movie entertained our whole family from age 3-38. Go see it this weekend!

Faith Like a Crowbar

I woke up this morning thinking about how a crowbar is a lot like our faith. I don't normally wake up thinking about crowbars, or even about analogies of faith. So I thought I should share this one with you. I know that there are plenty of other uses from a crowbar, and many more Bible passages that could support those analogies, but these are the ones that were on my mind this morning.

A crowbar is not a big tool, but it can be a mighty tool. Just like Faith...

Matthew 17 ²⁰ “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

A crowbar is strong.

Proverbs 27 ¹⁷ As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

A crowbar can be used to pry two things apart such as the truth from lies.

John 8 ³¹ Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. ³² And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The straight end of the crowbar can be used to pierce, just as our faith can be used to pierce peoples hearts.

Acts 2 ³⁶ “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”

³⁷ Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

³⁸ Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Most of us will use a crowbar in a time of need. Our faith is there in our time of need.

Luke 12 ¹¹ “And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, ¹² for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.”

A crowbar can even be used as a weapon!

Ephesians 6 ¹⁷ Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Used as a lever a crowbar can lift things off the ground! Faith can do the same.

Ecclesiastes 4 ⁹ Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. ¹⁰ If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Is it of any use apart from you?

How can your faith be a tool? Are you using that tool or is it sitting in the back of your shed rusting? Your faith can be a tool, but a tool is only good if you use it for what it was created for! I believe these can be summed in the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

³⁰ And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ ³¹ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

Matthew 28

¹⁹ Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Do NOT Worry

I am trying so hard not to worry, to completly trust in Him. I know that He has a plan, waiting on that plan is not always the easiest thing. It has been almost 6mo. with out work. I have applied just about everywhere just to be turned down, ignored, or told that there is a hiring freeze.

I totally see that these places are not where God wants me. But where does He want me?

We are considering selling our house, and either moving in with family, or staying in an apartment. This way we can continue to wait on Him and seek to find where He wants us.

A house is not a home, and I am only visiting this world. My home and my citizenship is in Heaven. So I will not worry about where I go, where I live, or what I do. As long as it honors my Father in heaven, that's all I really care about.

Promotion Sunday- New Series Roots of Our Faith

This Sunday is our Promotion Sunday! So excited to see some new faces in our group. One of the new faces will be my oldest daughter! Wow time really flies, it seems like not that long ago she fit on my chest!! Now she is going into Junior High. I guess this brings a whole new level of accountability to Sunday's.

We have 7 students moving up into Xtreme on Sunday's. To kick of their arrival we are starting a series called Roots of Our Faith. Beginning with the Nicene Creed.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We will focus on three words Big, Deep, and Wide.

BIG
…so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others (Romans 12:5).

DEEP
But although the world was made through him, the world didn’t recognize him when he came… So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us (John 1:10, 14).

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you do because he lives with you now and later will be in you (John 14:16-17).

Or don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? (1 Corinthians 6:19).

WIDE
In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God (John 1:1).

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it (John 3:17).

And may you have to power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that come from God (Ephesians 3:18-19).

I am so excited about our promotions! Welcome incoming 6th graders! We have some surprises, but I will save that for later!

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 9 out of 10. Tough weekend missing 3 leaders, including my sound board guy!

Attendance: 10 down almost 100% 3 day weekend might have something to do with it?

Service Length: 65 min

Understandable Message: Good message spoke to everyone about the deserts in our lives, and how God uses those times to grow us.

Grade: B- C+ Just an all round tough day.

Volunteer/Student Involvement: Sound board run by student leader.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Game- Revolution Power Point...history of revolutions. Best team only got 4 out of 10 questions right! Tough game. Don't think I will us that one again.

Music Playlist: Undignified, Take it All, ran out of time for the third song.

Favorite Moment: The end! No kidding it was a tough day. I have to say the fact that students recognized and were able to fill in the blanks on the stories in Exodus. That was cool

Thought this was great from Ministry Best Practices

Sin #1: Expect announcements to get volunteers. An announcement may get a couple of volunteers, but usually those are the people who are volunteering anyway. People must be challenged individually. A challenge to everybody with an announcement is in fact a challenge to nobody.

Sin #2: Ask by yourself. You need a team to help you invite volunteers. Try to recruit people who are "connectors" in the church. Put them together as a special inviting task force that operates like a nominating committee. The key element is to brainstorm about people who could fit the roles you need.

Sin #3: Ask For, and Expect Long-Term Commitments. Just remember that short-term projects provide excellent “first dates”—they’re how you find your long-term volunteers. Give people the opportunity to try on your ministry to see how it fits. Short-term volunteers have the opportunity to catch your ministry’s vision as they work closely with a passionate leader.

I just finished this book, and must say that Doug has done it again! Although there is nothing new to what he is teaching, Doug has a way to make it fresh, and understandable, through his own transparency.

In this book Doug talks about setting attainable goals, to connect with God daily. Many of us have said this is the year that we will read the Bible from front to back, only to fail a few weeks later. (I know I have tried many times) What about having a quiet time, or a time of prayer daily? (Again I fall short).

Doug's uncomplicated method of connecting with God, is so easy, even a Youth Pastor can do it!

The Word Became Flesh

Jesus the Lamb of God

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus’ First Disciples

35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39”Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. 40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46”Nazareth! Why notes in church?

In today's sessions of PDN Conference, Pastor Rick talked about why have outlines, or notes for your congregation? Here are the top 8 reasons to consider having notes/outlines.

Why Notes?

1. Increases attention- When people have fill-ins, they are more likely to listen so they do not miss the answers.

2. Increases retention- We lose close to 90% of what we learn as soon as we walk out the door.

3. Increases participation- Using notes/outline allows you to have the congregation read scripture out loud, and all have the same translation!

4. You cover more scripture in less time- Bottom line, you lose time waiting for people to turn to a passage in their Bibles.

5. Review message for years to come- It allows people in your church to review the sermon for years to come, or even later that day to increase the retention (See #2)

6. Basis for small group discussions- Small groups can take the notes and go deeper in the word and their discussion

7. Multiple translations- This will alleviate the problem of everyone reading from different translations.

8. Unbelievers don't bring Bibles to church- Even if they did, they may not know where Psalms is located. Save them some embarrassment and bring them right to God's word!

Notes/outlines, using a big screen, video clips, music, skits, personal stories. The more things you can use the more likely you are to reach more people.

Dear Parents,

This week we will be discussing the question Who is Jesus? and exploring His claims of being the Son of God, the Messiah, and even God Himself. One of the key concepts we’ll cover is the idea that Jesus was either God, or He was lying, or He was crazy—C. S. Lewis’ famous “Lord, Liar, or Lunatic” trilemma. How a person answers the question of Who is Jesus? is the most critical question in the world.

In this week’s episode of GOSPEL Journey Maui, Greg asks the cast to read the following chapters from the Book of John: John 1-5, 9-10, 18-20. This week consider reading these passages together as a family and discussing the following questions:

• What do these passages tell us about Jesus?

• Why is our view of Jesus and our response to ‘who do you say I am?’ so critical?

Weekend Teaching Series: Thirsty Week 1

Sermon Title: Is Your Soul Thirsty?

Sermon in a Sentence: We all get physically thirsty, can we get spiritually thirsty?

Bible Verses used: Isaiah 55 and John 4

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 6 out of 10. Fairly easy weekend, some new things with the sound board, iPod, and moving through slides all done by student tech.

Attendance: 18

Service Length: 62 min

Understandable Message: I think this was geared more towards the believer. I think that it went over some of the younger students heads.

Grade: Solid B I think that we could have tailored it more for the seeker, but all in all a pretty solid sermon.

Volunteer/Student Involvement: Student run games, sound board, and close in prayer. Very cool, I think this really gives ownership to the students, and they do a fantastic job!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Game- We did two games, one was a slide show game with 3 teams, on how well you know soda trivia. Followed by a one on one, male vs female saltine eating contest. Followed by questions about thirst. Great intro into the message.

Favorite Moment: Seeing some of the more reserved students getting involved in the games, and interacting with others. One student is going to get baptized next month!

Is the Cat in Your Cradle

This weekend I will get to have some one on one time with my daughter Ryan. I am really looking forward to playing XBox on the big TV, and going out to dinner on a date, playing at the water park, and just hanging out together.

I started to think why I don't do this all the time? Why does it take my wife taking some of the kids to Phoenix for me to spend some quality time with them?

What I found was not the most refreshing thing. There always seems to be something else to do. Something that at the moment seams more important at the time. Does this hit home with anyone else?

"Daddy, will you come outside so I can ride my bike in the street?"
"Daddy, can we play video games?"
"Daddy, getchu on the floor?" (My 3 year old wanting to wrestle)

Maybe these are not the same word for word requests, but they all shout the same thing..."Daddy will you spend some time with me?"

The usual replies follow:
"Not right now, maybe later"
"Honey I am really tired"
"I need to get this done"

What it shouts to a kid is, "I have more important things to do than to spend time with you."

That may sound harsh, and there maybe times when you are tired, or there is a deadline to be met... But at what cost?

There will come a time when my kids will be to busy for me. With there own deadlines, commitments, and families. I should be taking every opportunity to use this time wisely. (Think Cat's in the Cradle) I know I need to spend more time with my kids, and less time on "stuff".

Many really good questions were brought up last night which made me go back and look to see if my understanding, and what I had been taught growing up were true. I found some really cool stuff that explain things like: What happened to those who believed in God before Christ? When do we face Judgment? When we die are we with God immediately? I learned some things through my investigation, and I hope that this will clarify some things to you. www.gotquestions.org is a great place to start when you have questions.

Here are some of the questions that were asked.

Question: "When will the Resurrection take place?"

Answer: The Bible is clear that resurrection is a reality and this life is not all that there is. While death is the end of physical life, it is not the end of human existence. Many erroneously believe that there is one general resurrection at the end of the age, but the Bible teaches that there will be not one resurrection, but a series of resurrections, some to eternal life in heaven and some to eternal damnation (Daniel 12:2; John 5:28-29).

The first great resurrection was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is documented in each of the four Gospels (Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20), cited several times in Acts (Acts 1:22; 2:31; 4:2, 33; 26:23), and mentioned repeatedly in the letters to the churches (Romans 1:4; Philippians 3:10; 1 Peter 1:3). Much is made of the importance of Christ’s resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:12-34, which records that over five hundred people saw Him at one of His post-resurrection appearances. Christ’s resurrection is the “first fruits” or guarantee to every Christian that he will also be resurrected. Christ’s resurrection is also the basis of the Christian’s certainty that all people who have died will one day be raised to face fair and even-handed judgment by Jesus Christ (Acts 17:30-31). The resurrection to eternal life is described as “the first resurrection” (Revelation 20:5-6); the resurrection to judgment and torment is described as “the second death” (Revelation 20:6, 13-15).

The first great resurrection of the Church will occur at the time of the rapture. All those who have placed their trust in Jesus Christ during the Church Age, and have died before Jesus returns, will be resurrected at the rapture. The Church Age began on the Day of Pentecost and will end when Christ returns to take believers back to heaven with Him (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The Apostle Paul explained that not all Christians will die, but all will be changed, i.e., given resurrection-type bodies (1 Corinthians 15:50-58), some without having to die! Christians who are alive, and those who have already died, will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air and be with Him always!

Another great resurrection will occur when Christ returns to earth (His Second Coming) at the end of the Tribulation period. After the rapture, the Tribulation is the next event after the Church Age in God’s chronology. This will be a time of terrible judgment upon the world, described in great detail in Revelation chapters 6-18. Though all Church Age believers will be gone, millions of people left behind on earth will come to their senses during this time and will trust in Jesus as their Savior. Tragically, most of them will pay for their faith in Jesus by losing their lives (Revelation 6:9-11; 7:9-17; 13:7, 15-17; 17:6; 19:1-2). These believers in Jesus who die during the Tribulation will be resurrected at Christ’s return and will reign with Him for a thousand years during the Millennium (Revelation 20:4, 6). Old Testament believers such as Job, Noah, Abraham, David and even John the Baptist (who was assassinated before the Church began) will be resurrected at this time also. Several passages in the Old Testament mention this event (Job 19:25-27; Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:1-2; Hosea 13:14). Ezekiel 37:1-14 describes primarily the regathering of the Nation of Israel using the symbolism of dead corpses coming back to life. But from the language used, a physical resurrection of dead Israelis cannot be excluded from the passage. Again, all believers in God (in the Old Testament era) and all believers in Jesus (in the New Testament era) participate in the first resurrection, a resurrection to life (Revelation 20:4, 6).

There may be another resurrection at the end of the Millennium, one which is implied, but never explicitly stated in Scripture. It is possible that some believers will die a physical death during the Millennium. Through the prophet Isaiah, God said, "No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his days; for the youth will die at the age of one hundred and the one who does not reach the age of one hundred will be thought accursed” (Isaiah 65:20). On the other hand, it is also possible that death in the Millennium will only come to the disobedient. In either event, some kind of transformation will be required to fit believers in their natural bodies in the Millennium for pristine existence throughout eternity. Each believer will need to have a “resurrected” type of body.

It is clear from Scripture that God will destroy the entire universe, including the earth, with fire (2 Peter 3:7-12). This will be necessary to purge God’s creation of its endemic evil and decay brought upon it by man’s sin. In its place God will create a new heaven and a new earth (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1-4). But what will happen to those believers who survived the Tribulation and entered the Millennium in their natural bodies? And what will happen to those who were born during the Millennium, trusted in Jesus, and continued to live in their natural bodies? Paul has made it clear that flesh and blood, which is mortal and able to decay, cannot inherit the kingdom of God. That eternal kingdom is inhabitable only by those with resurrected, glorified bodies that are no longer mortal and are not able to decay (1 Corinthians 15:35-49). Presumably, these believers will be given resurrection bodies without having to die. Precisely when this happens is not explained, but theologically, it must happen somewhere in the transition from the old earth and universe to the new earth and new heaven (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1-4).

There is a final resurrection, apparently of all the unbelieving dead of all ages. Jesus Christ will raise them from the dead (John 5:25-29) after the Millennium, the thousand-year reign of Christ (Revelation 20:5), and after the destruction of the present earth and universe (2 Peter 3:7-12; Revelation 20:11). This is the resurrection described by Daniel as an awakening “from the dust of the ground ... to disgrace and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2). It is described by Jesus as a “resurrection of judgment” (John 5:28-29).

The Apostle John saw something that would happen in the future. He saw a “great white throne” (Revelation 20:11). Heaven and earth “fled away” from the One sitting on it. This is evidently a description of the dissolution by fire of all matter, including the entire universe and earth itself (2 Peter 3:7-12). All the (godless) dead will stand before the throne. This means they have been resurrected after the thousand years (Revelation 20:5). They will possess bodies that can feel pain but will never cease to exist (Mark 9:43-48). They will be judged, and their punishment will be commensurate with their works. But there is another book opened—the Lamb’s book of life (Revelation 21:27). Those whose names are not written in the book of life are cast into the “lake of fire,” which amounts to “the second death” (Revelation 20:11-15). No indication is given of any who appear at this judgment that their names are found in the book of life. Rather, those whose names appear in the book of life were among those who are blessed, for they received forgiveness and partook of the first resurrection, the resurrection to life (Revelation 20:6).

Question: "What does the Bible say about soul sleep?"

Answer: “Soul sleep” is a belief that after a person dies, his/her soul “sleeps” until the resurrection and final judgment. The concept of “soul sleep” is not biblical. When the Bible describes a person “sleeping” in relation to death (Luke 8:52; 1 Corinthians 15:6), it does not mean literal sleep. Sleeping is just a way to describe death because a dead body appears to be asleep. The moment we die, we face the judgment of God (Hebrews 9:27). For believers, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). For unbelievers, death means everlasting punishment in hell (Luke 16:22-23).

Question: "What does the Bible say about when God will judge us?"

Answer: There are two separate judgments. Believers are judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ (Romans 14:10-12). Every believer will give an account of himself, and the Lord will judge the decisions he made—including those concerning issues of conscience. This judgment does not determine salvation, which is by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), but rather is the time when believers must give an account of their lives in service to Christ. Our position in Christ is the “foundation” spoken of in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15. That which we build upon the foundation can be the “gold, silver, and precious stones” of good works in Christ’s name, obedience and fruitfulness—dedicated spiritual service to glorify God and build the church. Or what we build on the foundation may be the “wood, hay and stubble” of worthless, frivolous, shallow activity with no spiritual value. The Judgment Seat of Christ will reveal this.

The gold, silver and precious stones in the lives of believers will survive God’s refining fire (v. 13), and believers will be rewarded based on those good works—how faithfully we served Christ (1 Corinthians 9:4-27), how well we obeyed the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), how victorious we were over sin (Romans 6:1-4), how well we controlled our tongues (James 3:1-9), etc. We will have to give an account for our actions, whether they were truly indicative of our position in Christ. The fire of God’s judgment will completely burn up the “wood, hay and stubble” of the words we spoke and things we did which had no eternal value. “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12 ).

The second judgment is that of unbelievers who will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). This judgment does not determine salvation, either. Everyone at the Great White Throne is an unbeliever who has rejected Christ in life and is therefore already doomed to the lake of fire. Revelation 20:12 says that unbelievers will be “judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” Those who have rejected Christ as Lord and Savior will be judged based on their works alone, and because the Bible tells us that “by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified” (Galatians 2:16), they will be condemned. No amount of good works and the keeping of God’s laws can be sufficient to atone for sin. All their thoughts, words and actions will be judged against God’s perfect standard and found wanting. There will be no reward for them, only eternal condemnation and punishment.

Question: "Where did Old Testament believers go when they died?"

Answer: The Old Testament teaches life after death, and that all people went to a place of conscious existence called Sheol. The wicked were there (Psalm 9:17; 31:17; 49:14; Isaiah 5:14), and so were the righteous (Genesis 37:35; Job 14:13; Psalm 6:5; 16:10; 88:3; Isaiah 38:10).

The New Testament equivalent of Sheol is Hades. Prior to Christ’s resurrection, Luke 16:19-31 shows Hades to be divided into two realms: a place of comfort where Lazarus was and a place of torment where the rich man was. The word hell in verse 23 is not “Gehenna” (place of eternal torment) but “Hades” (place of the dead). Lazarus’s place of comfort is elsewhere called Paradise (Luke 23:43). Between these two districts of Hades is “a great gulf fixed” (Luke 16:26).

Jesus is described as having descended into Hades after His death (Acts 2:27, 31; cf. Ephesians 4:9). At the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it seems that the believers in Hades (i.e., the occupants of Paradise) were moved to another location. Now, Paradise is above rather than below (2 Corinthians 12:2-4).

Today, when a believer dies, he is “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6-9). When an unbeliever dies, he follows the Old Testament unbelievers to Hades. At the final judgment, Hades will be emptied before the Great White Throne, where its occupants will be judged prior to entering the lake of fire (Revelation 20:13-15).

Grounded from Youth Group?

This is something I have heard a few times now, and still don't understand it. Students getting grounded from their small groups. Parents, why on earth would you ground your kid from attending their small group?! I know that some of you will say,"Because they really enjoy it, and I need to take something away that they enjoy." But why take away a night they get to worship Jesus?!
I will probably offend some of you who read this, but take a moment to consider the following:

* Are there are other things that your child holds dear. (TV, video games, dessert, texting, talking on the phone, going out on the weekend, etc).

* Do you really want to keep them from worshiping and spending time learning about God?!

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

*Is it possible that it is less of a punishment for them, and more "free time" for you?

Think about this one, I know that we all have busy schedules, and sometimes the last thing we want to do is go out at the end of the day. Could it be that Satan is using your exhaustion, or busy schedule? "They don't need to go tonight. You have had a long day. They don't deserve to go tonight. Is it really a big deal if they miss this once?" See Satan does the same in our lives on Sunday morning.
This may come as a surprise to you, but there are days when I wake up and don't "feel" like going to church and teaching your kids. Ok, let that one sink in for a moment...There are some Sunday mornings I don't "feel" like getting up and teaching your kids. I love what I do, absolutely, but I hear those whispers too. It's not about doing what you feel like, it's about doing what is good and pleasing to Jesus.

Two questions to ask yourself:
1. What is most important to you in your life?
2. What is most important to you in your childs life?

As a parent if there is one thing that I want more than anything for my child, is to know that they are walking with the Lord. Don't get me wrong, I wish them health, happiness, to find the right person to marry etc. But the number one thing I want for their life, is a healthy relationship with Jesus that will last the rest of their lives. Really when you think about it, nothing else matters. Nothing is more important than their eternal salvation and their relationship with Jesus.

Matthew 6:19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

My goal as your youth pastor is to train and equip your students so that when they graduate from High School that they do not graduate from their faith. (6 out of 10 students disengage from their faith when they graduate from school.)

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

I need your help. Your child needs your help. Make church and their youth events a priority, not a reward. Parents are you in?

Gospel Journey Maui Week 7 Updates

Dear Parents,

This week we will be watching GOSPEL Journey Maui episode 7, What happens after we die? During our discussion time, we’ll be exploring the most widely accepted possibilities of extinction, reincarnation, and resurrection. The main point of our lesson time will be that Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, combined with the Judgment Day passage in Revelation 20:11-15, teaches that all people will one day be resurrected from the dead to face judgment and then their eternal destiny in either heaven or hell.

Here are a few suggested parent/teen activities you might consider using as a springboard to deeper spiritual conversation on this challenging topic:
• Visit a cemetery and read the various epitaphs. Talk about how you would like to be remembered and how that might play into what happens on Judgment Day.
• Take the ‘what age will you die’ quiz found at this website: http://www.blogthings.com/whatagewillyoudiequiz/. Talk about how this can change your perspective on life and Judgment Day.

Engaging your teen in spiritual conversation will help them work through questions they may have and will help to ground them in their Christian faith. So set aside some time this week to explore a topic we all wrestle with from time to time.

Why bother?

Last night at Fuel(our High School Small Group) a question was brought up. If God knew Adam and Eve were going to sin, why did He even bother creating everything He did. Why did He create them when He already knew they were going to let Him down? To my surprise many students were also struggling with this question.

We went around the room and allowed the students to wrestle with this thought. One analogy was brought up about architect who builds a building. It's a beautiful building, yet he does not know who will move into it and what will become of it. Will the tenants trash it, will they knock it down and build something else? That's not what the architect is concerned with. His concern is creating a building.

I thought that was pretty good for the creation of the world. But what about people? God created us to be with Him and He gave us free will. But if He knew we would let Him down why even bother? This is where they got stuck. No one could figure out why God would create someone knowing that they would let Him down, or sin against Him.

It's amazing how the Holy Spirit works so quickly. I began to think of my own relationship with my kids as their father. I love my kids, but they don't always honor me in everything they do. They don't always love me the way I would like them to. Our relationship is not exactly how I envision it to be(kinda like the Brady Bunch). However, I love my kids, even though they are not perfect. Even though we do not have a perfect relationship all the time. Even knowing this now, I would not change the fact that I chose to have them. It would not keep me from having other children.

I think it's the same with our relationship with our Father in Heaven. We are not perfect. Even as believers, we let Him down. We fail, we sin, we don't love Him with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. He knew that we would not be perfect, but He chose to create us, and love us anyway. If He had wanted perfection, He would have created robots. What He wanted was relationship, so He created us.

Birthday Wrap Up

38 was an AWESOME birthday! My wife made a German Chocolate cake, and homemade pizza rolls, my favorite!

I got a call from Neely at PDYM, and was accepted as a PDYM Mentor for Southern Arizona!

At Fuel, I was ambushed with silly string, and Nerf guns from HSM! They got me good, so much fun! On top of that they came with cards, a GIANT cookie, and another German Chocolate cake all homemade!

We had some of the best conversations that we have had to date hands down.

Then the best part of all; two students accepted Christ, and another told me she was ready to be baptized on the 17th! WOW! Thank you God!

Finished up the night with LOST, and more pizza rolls, with the best wife in the world.

Here is the video Saddleback did with Max, who went on a missions trip to New Mexico as part of a punishment for his tagging. Max went to New Mexico an angry teen. Max returned, but he will never be the same. I got to hear Max's testimony, and talk with him for a little while. Amazing guy, incredible transformation. Check him out.
